22° Halo Visible around the Sun on March 26, 2012
[Full story]
On March 26th, 2012 sky watchers were pleasantly surprised by a circular rainbow visible around the sun. This phenomenon is called a 22° Halo, one of the many optical phenomena, that forms a 22° circle around the sun. To check this stretch out the fingers of your hand at arms length. The tips of the thumb and the little finger then subtend around 20°. Place the thumb over the sun and the halo will extend a little from the little finger tip. The halo is always the same diameter, regardless of its position in the sky. |

Rainfall OutlookRainfall Outlook for the Second and Third Quarter of 2012
Sea Surface
Temperatures (SST) in the
tropical Pacific Ocean have gone from slightly below average values (weak La Niña conditions)
to average or slightly above average levels during March 2012. The
latter is a hint that a weak El Niño may develop over there during the
next few months. In the tropical
Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the SST are forecast to be near
or slightly below
average levels. This development for now indicates that conditions for
rainfall in the southern Caribbean and northern South America will
become slightly unfavorable. Only average
rainfall amounts therefore are
now expected through October 2012 in the ABC Islands. Rainfall in the
SSS Islands on the other hand is expected to be at or slightly above
average
levels through the same period.
